Woodward brings mountain energy to the U of U for high-flying Rail Jam

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Woodward Park City and the University of Utah are teaming up to bring winter sports culture to campus with the ASUU Rail Jam, a high-energy ski and snowboard event taking place Nov. 7 on the Union Lawn at the University of Utah.

The student-led event, hosted by the Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU), will feature a professional-grade course built by Woodward Park City’s terrain park team, challenging both professional athletes and university students to compete for cash prizes and gear awards.

The course will transform the Union Lawn and Free Speech Area into a snow-covered terrain park complete with rails, platforms, and lighting for the nighttime competition. Organizers expect up to 2,500 spectators.

“This event gives us a unique chance to bring the energy and excitement of Woodward directly to students who will have the opportunity to experience action sports like they’ve never seen before,” said Gar Trayner, General Manager of Woodward Park City. “We’re creating a space where students can compete alongside pros, experience world-class terrain park design, and see what winter sports culture is all about—right on their own campus.”

The event will include four student divisions — Women’s Ski, Men’s Ski, Women’s Snowboard, and Men’s Snowboard — with professionals joining for an exhibition and demo session. Pro riders will share tricks and techniques while showcasing high-level rail riding.

Woodward Park City’s terrain park leads, Benny McGinnis and Rory Bruder, will oversee the design and build of the course. The five-day setup begins Nov. 2 and is part of Woodward’s ongoing efforts to connect with Utah’s student and outdoor communities.

“We’re excited to partner with Woodward Park City to bring this level of action sports to the U campus,” said Lori McDonald, Vice President for Student Affairs. “Events like this reflect our students’ passion for outdoor recreation and give them a chance to experience the exhilaration of winter events in Utah. It’s not every day you get to watch Olympic-level athletes compete right in the middle of campus.”

Admission to the ASUU Rail Jam is free for University of Utah students, staff, and faculty. Tickets for the general public are $15 and available at the Union front desk from Oct. 27 through Nov. 7. Doors open at 4 p.m., with competitions scheduled from 5–8 p.m.
