SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Joanna Andres, a social studies teacher at Park City High School, has been named Utah’s 2026 Teacher of the Year.
The Utah State Board of Education announced the honor at an awards ceremony and banquet on Thursday in Salt Lake City, recognizing Andres for her ability to foster civic engagement, her leadership within the education community, and her impact on students.
Andres, in her seventh year with Park City School District, has distinguished herself through student-centered approaches in a subject often reliant on memorization. Enrollment in the AP Government course has grown significantly under her leadership, with students consistently achieving pass rates above state and national averages.
“Joanna embodies the very best of our profession—innovation, empathy, excellence, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student,” said Park City School District Superintendent Lyndsay Huntsman. “Her work has transformed classrooms, inspired colleagues, and elevated the learning experience for countless young people.”
Beyond academic outcomes, Andres is known for creating a classroom where students feel seen, challenged, and empowered. She encourages students to ask difficult questions, engage in respectful debate on current events, and connect history to their own lives.
Her influence extends outside the classroom as well. She has served as Social Studies Department Chair, AP Department Chair, and PCEA Building Representative. Before joining Park City High, she pioneered a data-driven Response to Intervention program at the Weilenmann School of Discovery, building a multi-tiered support system for academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
Andres holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from National University and multiple endorsements, including ESL and CTE Criminal Law. She was selected by a 15-member committee of education delegates across the state.
The committee recognized Andres as a teacher who combines high academic standards with a personalized, supportive and dynamic learning environment.
As Utah Teacher of the Year, Andres will serve as an ambassador for the profession and represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year program. More information is available at schools.utah.gov.
