SNAPPED: Young bull elk spotted near Kimball Junction as antler growth peaks

PARK CITY, Utah — TownLift photographer Randi Sidman-Moore spotted this herd of five bull elk just off the road on her way to Kimball Junction, near the Lincoln Station apartment. It’s not uncommon to see elk herds throughout Park City in the summer as they seek food and cooler spots.

After a full summer of growth, elk antlers are typically fully developed by mid-August. Some of the small bull elk in this herd may be yearlings, as they’re only sporting single spikes. Mature bull elk antlers typical have five to six points per side, can grow up to four feet long, and weigh up to 40 pounds. Adult elk can weigh a staggering 1,100 pounds and stand up to 5 feet at the shoulder.

While these majestic animals are a welcome sight, it’s important for residents and visitors to keep a safe distance, at least 25 yards, and to yield to wildlife on the roads to ensure everyone’s safety.
