Park Silly Sunday Market secures renewal through 2030

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Council has approved a renewal that will keep the Park Silly Sunday Market running through 2030.

The previous city services agreement ran through 2027, but included the option to add the years 2028 through 2030 if both parties agree. Special Event Manager Chris Finney introduced the proposal to renew and stated he and his team were in favor.

Kate McChesney, Executive Director of Park Silly Sunday Market, spoke with the city council to explain why their team is asking for the renewal now. “I wanted to do it earlier rather than later,” she explained, stating that having a longer contract helps her team with securing long-term sponsors and writing grants. “With everything happening and the volatility of Park City, they want to know that Park Silly Market is going to stay,” she said. “And I would like to be able to tell them that we are and at least give them that 2030 date.”

McChesney emphasized that the renewal is part of the market’s existing contract and is not a request for a new extension. Some Main Street businesses have raised concerns about the market in past years, but McChesney said she has been working closely with the Historic Park City Alliance to maintain a cooperative relationship. A business owner also spoke during public comment, urging council to provide the market stability so it can secure sponsorships and plan ahead.

The 2024 season for Park Silly Market will wrap on September 21. Afterward, McChesney’s team will debrief with the city and propose dates for next year’s market. With the renewal secured, she said, the team can now focus on long-term planning and ensuring the market continues as a staple on Main Street for years to come.
