Overpass activism: Park City group joins national protest movement

PARK CITY, Utah — A new protest group in Park City is taking to the I-80 overpass near Kimball Junction to share its messages with passing motorists.

The We Believe Park City chapter of the national Visibility Brigade joined activists across the country on Saturday for the group’s “Be Brave” demonstration. From overpasses nationwide, participants displayed banners encouraging drivers with messaging focused on bravery. Park City’s sign read: “Honk! Be Brave. Resist Tyranny.”

“It’s encouraging when you’re on that bridge and you’re waving and people wave back, and they honk,” said organizer and chapter co-founder Riki Case. She added that positive feedback from drivers reinforces the sense that the effort is resonating.

Previous to Saturday’s event, the Park City group staged an overpass event focused on the Epstein files. Going forward, Case said members plan to hold semi-regular demonstrations highlighting current events or broader civic messages.

“Our goal is to bring awareness to issues people might not be paying attention to, and to let them know they’re not alone in being concerned about the country,” Case said. “It’s also about encouraging them to act.”

The Visibility Brigade was formed in 2020 in New Jersey.  There are now over 200 chapters in more than 40 states who regularly provide physical messaging on overpasses. Rather than many participants holding individual signs, Visibility Brigade chapters unite on an overpass to support one large message broadcast to motorists.

Though still in its early stages, the local chapter hopes its efforts will draw more supporters. For Case, activism is as much personal as it is political.

“This is something I do to help people feel connected to others who are also concerned,” she said. “It’s a known fact that action is an antidote to anxiety. So I’m taking action. It helps me personally deal with what’s going on, and hopefully it inspires others to do the same.”
