Motorist tip leads to DUI arrest in Summit County

PARK CITY, Utah — A Summit County driver was arrested after he was reported swerving across lanes, hitting a construction sign, and continuing erratic driving on Interstate 80 and State Route 224.

Deputies credited a quick-thinking motorist who called dispatch and helped them locate the vehicle. The caller remained within sight of the white truck until deputies could initiate a traffic stop that uncovered suspected methamphetamine and burglary tools.

The suspect was arrested and booked into Summit County Jail for driving under the influence, possession or use of a controlled substance, and possession of burglary tools.

According to Sgt. Skyler Talbot with Summit County Sheriff’s Office, a shaved key was found in the ignition of the truck, although there were no initial indications that the vehicle was stolen.

Speaking of the caller who aided in reporting and locating the vehicle, Talbot said, “If it’s safe, we don’t discourage someone from keeping eyes on a suspect vehicle, but we certainly don’t want anyone to put themselves in danger.”

Reporting erratic driving

Last month, the Utah Highway Patrol stacked 11,440 empty beer cans on the Capitol steps, one for every DUI arrest made in 2024, in a sobering demonstration of just how common impaired driving remains on Utah roads.

If you see a vehicle driving dangerously and suspect the driver may be impaired, UHP advises calling 911 right away. Dispatchers typically ask for a description of the car, its license plate number, location, and direction of travel so they can alert nearby officers.

Authorities caution drivers not to approach or try to stop a suspected impaired motorist. Instead, they recommend keeping a safe distance and sharing as many details as possible to help officers respond quickly.
