Man reported armed in Canyons area detained near Park City Hospital; schools temporarily sheltered in place

SUMMIT COUNTY — Sheriff’s deputies responded Thursday afternoon to reports of a man who may have been armed near the Exxon gas station in Silver Springs, also known as the blue roof gas station, neighborhood in the Canyons Village area, prompting precautionary lockdowns at two nearby schools.

According to Sgt. Skyler Talbot with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the initial call came in reporting that a man had pointed a gun at someone in the area. Deputies believed they had located the suspect near the “blue roof” 7-Eleven gas station, leading authorities to request Parley’s Park Elementary and the Winter Sports School to shelter in place.

Talbot said the school safety measures were taken “as a precaution” and that “there was no immediate known threat to the schools themselves.”

The man was ultimately located by hospital security at Park City Hospital and detained without incident.

Authorities said they have not yet confirmed whether the man was actually armed, or what type of weapon may have been involved. No injuries were reported.

The Sheriff’s Office said the case remains under investigation.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
