Construction begins on SR-224 Bus Rapid Transit project in Park City

PARK CITY, Utah — Work is set to begin Wednesday on the State Route 224 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, a new transit line that will connect Old Town with Kimball Junction through dedicated bus lanes.

Lane closures will take place nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Saturday as crews restripe the roadway. On Saturday, Sept. 2, construction teams will begin removing portions of the landscaped median along SR-224. City officials said the change will help reduce the project’s overall footprint and limit the amount of road widening required.

Additional work during this first phase includes installing underground fiber-optic lines and new storm drainage. Starting Sept. 8, storm drain installation will reduce SR-224 to one lane in each direction for about six weeks.

Officials noted that the number and location of open lanes will vary as work progresses. The Utah Department of Transportation urges drivers to follow reduced speed limits and avoid distractions while traveling through the construction zone.

The BRT line is expected to be completed by summer 2028, with service beginning shortly afterward. In the meantime, High Valley Transit is inviting residents to submit ideas for the new line’s name through an online form.
