Summit County health department urges heat‑smart exercise this summer

PARK CITY, Utah — As temperatures climb, Summit County Health Department is urging residents to adjust their routines to avoid heat‑related illness while staying active.

In a summer safety email, the department recommends exercising during cooler parts of the day—early morning or late evening—or moving workouts indoors when the mercury soars. It also stresses consistent hydration: drinking water before, during and after physical activity.

The advisory calls for light, breathable clothing, daily sunscreen use and close attention to warning signs such as dizziness, nausea or unusual fatigue. “Slow down or take breaks if your body signals distress,” the email states, noting that heat exhaustion can escalate quickly without intervention.

Health officials encourage swapping high‑impact outdoor workouts for water‑based activities like swimming, or choosing indoor options such as dance, yoga or body‑weight circuits when temperatures peak. “A little planning goes a long way to stay safe, stay cool and keep moving,” the release says.

The department has also launched a “Summer Safety Pledge” campaign, inviting residents to commit to protective habits and share tips with friends and family. Participants become eligible for prize drawings designed to reinforce safe behavior throughout the season.

More information and the full pledge form are available through the Summit County Health, which coordinates seasonal health initiatives across the county.
