According to Wild Aware Utah, approximately 1,500 mountain goats live in Utah, often spotted in high alpine areas like the Uintas, Tushar Mountains, and Mount Timpanogos. These sure-footed animals are built for cold, rugged terrain, with cloven hooves and thick coats that help them survive and climb steep slopes.
If you see a mountain goat, give it space — at least 150 feet. While they may appear calm, they can become aggressive, especially during spring (when nannies protect their kids) or the fall rut. Mountain goats can be dangerous to people and pets — their sharp horns and speed are no joke, especially in remote or steep terrain.
Keep dogs leashed, never feed or approach a goat, and back away if one comes near. To report aggressive wildlife, contact the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources or local authorities.
