LA SAL, Utah — On July 12, a rare vortex formed over the Deer Creek Fire, whipping flames into the air and causing additional structure damage. No injuries were reported, but a BLM fire engine was damaged and pulled from operations.
Monday has brought calmer weather, allowing firefighters to make progress, especially on the northeastern edge near Hang Dog Creek. Crews used dozer lines and burnout operations to help slow the spread.
The fire, located about 18 miles south of Moab near La Sal, has grown to 10,058 acres with 0% containment. There are currently 300 personnel on scene, including 5 helicopters and 15 engines.
Evacuations remain in place north of Highway 46, and closures continue in parts of the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
Forecasts suggest gusty winds today, with potential thunderstorms through Thursday. Rain may arrive Friday or Saturday.
