PARK CITY, Utah — A Open Fire prohibition has gone into effect in Park City as of June 15 and will remain effective through October 31. Open flames and sources of ignitions are now prohibited within Park City as the forecasted threat of wildfire increases due to warmer temperatures, high winds, and dry vegetation.
Fire Marshall Cherie Wellmon shared in a social media video was is and isn’t permitted during this period. “Under our open flame prohibition, fireworks are not permitted,” said Wellmon. “That also includes sparklers because it is still an open source of ignition and it is a risk.”
Similar prohibitions have been enforced for the previous four years, although this year is the earliest the rule has gone into effect. The recommendation for this year’s Open Fire restrictions were made with assistance from the Chief of Police, Emergency Manager, and the Park City Fire District.
Wildfire remains Park City’s most likely and potentially the most dangerous natural hazard, according to a staff report presented in an April city council meeting. Wildfire could impact thousands of homes, businesses, and industries and have long-lasting negative social and economic consequences.
