Old Ranch Road closed to pedestrians, bikers through September

PARK CITY, Utah — Due to growing safety concerns, Old Ranch Road is now closed to pedestrians and bikers as construction on multiple projects continues.

Four projects are currently underway on the road, including the re-routing of a water ditch, widening the road and installing medians, and a collaboration with Rocky Mountain Power to bury power lines. A new section of 10-foot-wide asphalt trail will also be laid from North Old Ranch Road to West Old Ranch Road to help recreationists safely connect to Willow Creek Park.

The decision to close the road comes after a pattern of pedestrians and bikers using the work zone as a way to circumvent vehicular traffic on the road, according to project engineer Matt Kendall. “Construction has now picked up, and that work zone is now more restricted,” said Kendall. “There were a lot of bicyclists going in and out, and it became a safety risk to them, as well as the workers in the area.”

Kendall also noted that cars were driving in the work zone to bypass the one-way traffic signal. “It just got more and more that people weren’t following the traffic pattern that we had out there. And so with construction getting busier and more activities going on, we made that decision to just close it down, to eliminate that potential risk.”

The closure is effective immediately and will remain through the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed mid September this year.
