World’s top sheepdogs to compete at Soldier Hollow

HEBER CITY, Utah — This Memorial Day Weekend, the Soldier Hollow Classic Sheepdog Championship & Festival marks its 21st year. The event will run May 23–26, at the Soldier Hollow Olympic venue in Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Drawing top handlers and dogs from the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Wales, Ireland, and South Africa, the Classic is recognized for its elite-level competition and scenic setting. Founded in 2003, the event has grown into a four-day celebration of working dogs and rural heritage, attracting more than 13,000 spectators annually.

Daily trials begin at 8 a.m., with competitors and their canine partners herding more than 300 Rambouillet ewes across the challenging hillside course—a site made famous during the 2002 Winter Olympics and set to host events again in 2034. The Soldier Hollow Classic has since become a regional signature tradition, blending sport, culture and community.

“The Soldier Hollow Classic is a signature event that highlights the unique spirit, heritage, and breathtaking beauty of Heber Valley,” said Dallin Koecher, Executive Director at Heber Valley Tourism, Chamber, and Economic Development. “It brings people together from around the world to celebrate skill, tradition, and community in one of Utah’s most scenic settings. We’re proud to support such an iconic experience year after year.”

Beyond the sheepdog trials, the festival features a wide range of family-friendly attractions. Visitors can enjoy dog agility and police K9 demonstrations, sheep shearing, spinning and weaving exhibits, duck herding, raptor shows, and live bagpipe performances. Food and merchandise vendors line the venue, and the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation will host a Bohemian Beer Garden throughout the weekend.
