Summit County Health highlights vaccination and testing during Hepatitis Awareness Month

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah – May is Hepatitis Awareness Month, and Summit County Health is emphasizing the importance of learning about vaccination, testing, and treatment for hepatitis A, B, and C.

Both hepatitis A and B can both be prevented with vaccines. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services requires hepatitis vaccines for all students entering kindergarten and 7th grade. Specifically, two doses of the hepatitis A vaccine and three doses of the hepatitis B vaccine are required, although a parent may claim an exemption to immunization for medical, religious, or personal reasons.

No vaccine has been developed for hepatitis C, though it can be treated and cured with oral medication. Hepatitis C rates have been on the decline in Utah, with 2024 showing a 35.8% decrease from 2023. Summit County reported less than five cases of hepatitis C in 2024.

Summit County Heath offers a variety of clinical services, including hepatitis A and B vaccinations and testing for hepatitis B and C. Patients are encouraged to contact them with any questions or to schedule an appointment.
