HEBER CITY, Utah — On Saturday, May 24, Heber City residents experienced a rare and startling encounter with wildlife when a bear was spotted wandering through town, prompting a swift and coordinated response from local authorities.
The first sighting occurred near the Wingpointe Apartments pool, where residents alerted the Heber City Police Department to the presence of a bear in the vicinity. Upon arrival, officers witnessed the bear fleeing the area and crossing U.S. Highway 40, heading in the direction of the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office and Heber Valley Hospital’s Emergency Room.
Following the initial encounter, the bear was spotted again at the On the Run gas station, where it caused a brief disruption but did not harm anyone. From there, the animal made its way to the Royal Coachmen area, drawing further concern from residents and authorities.
Heber City Police, with assistance from Wasatch County deputies and officials from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DNR), acted quickly to contain the situation. Officers were able to “tree” the bear—encouraging it to climb to safety in a tree—while DNR personnel prepared for a safe and humane capture.
Wildlife officials tranquilized the bear without incident and transported it to a secure location for evaluation and relocation.
No injuries were reported, and officials praised the calm response of residents and the quick action of law enforcement and wildlife experts.
Authorities remind the public that springtime can bring increased wildlife activity, especially as bears emerge from hibernation and search for food. Residents are advised to secure trash, avoid feeding wildlife, and report sightings promptly.
This incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between rural communities and the natural environment surrounding them.
