Fisher, who lives and trains at altitude in Park City, Utah, made his decisive move on the final lap, going wide to pass Hocker just before the finish line. Hocker also dipped under the previous world record of 7:23.81, set by Lamecha Girma.

“Battle for the ages right there,” Fisher told NBC Sports after the race. “Cole’s at the top of his game right now… With 50 (meters) to go, going against the defending 1500m gold medalist, it’s a little scary, but I pulled it off.”

The showdown had been highly anticipated since its announcement in December. As reported by LetsRun.com, the matchup represented a rare meeting between America’s premier middle and long-distance talents. Fisher entered the race with a 3-0 career record against Hocker, though he had acknowledged the advantage of competing at longer distances.

“I didn’t know I was 3-0 against Cole, but to be fair, I’ve never met him at his distance,” Fisher had told LetsRun.com before the race. “That would be like saying I’m undefeated against him at 10k or something — I don’t think that’s a fair comparison.”

The record-breaking performance adds to Fisher’s impressive resume, which includes becoming the first American to medal in both the 5000m and 10000m at the same Olympics in Paris. His continued success demonstrates the benefits of training at Park City’s elevation of 7,000 feet.
