DWR invites youth to compete in 40th annual hunting skills contest

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources announced updates to its annual hunting skills contest—formerly known as the Youth Hunter Education Challenge—to include an adult division along with two youth categories.

At the 40th anniversary of the event, DWR officials said anyone who has completed Hunter Education is eligible to register and compete. The contest, launched by the National Rifle Association in 1985 and now involving 16 states, offers participants a chance to improve their hunting, marksmanship and safety skills.

“We added an adult category a few years ago because it never hurts anyone to improve their hunting skills, and we wanted the name change to more accurately portray that this event is open to all ages. This event provides a fun atmosphere for that, and is a great activity for families to enjoy and participate in together,” said DWR Shooting Sports Manager Troy Anderson.

The two-day event is scheduled for June 20-21 at the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range at 6000 W. 2100 South in Salt Lake City. Registration costs $35 per participant and must be completed via Eventbrite by May 30. The competition is divided into three groups: youth under 15, youth ages 15-18 and adults aged 19 and older.

Competitors will take part in events that include wildlife identification; .22 long rifle; shotgun; archery; muzzleloader and orienteering—both returning by popular demand; a safety trail featuring multiple ethical and safety scenarios; and a written exam testing knowledge of hunting rules, regulations and Hunter Education content. Prizes will be awarded to the top five scorers in the junior and senior divisions and the top three in the adult division. In a new offering, all participants will receive free trial access to onX Maps.

Anderson noted the program’s appeal lies in its ability to build skills and spark enthusiasm among young participants. “There are a lot of great things about this program, and one of the most rewarding things is to see the excitement of the youth when they master new skills as part of the competition,” he said. “We hope that this becomes a new tradition for many Utah families interested in outdoor recreation.”
