Weekend storm could bring up to 8″ of snow to local ski resorts

PARK CITY, Utah – The National Weather Service reports that an atmospheric river event will bring heavy snowfall to the Wasatch Mountains north of I-80. The heaviest snow is expected Saturday and Sunday, with accumulations of 12 to 24 inches likely above 7,000 feet. Lower elevations will initially see rain, with a chance of snow overnight.

Some forecasting models show the path of this storm is still in question, but the latest models show Utah will likely benefit as the storm is pushing further south than predicted earlier. The Cottonwoods will get higher totals than the Park City resorts because elevation will play a big factor – the snowline appears to be at about the 7,000 foot mark.

Beaver Mountain could get up to 28″ of snow out of this storm, while the high mark for Alta is 17″ by Sunday morning. As always with an atmospheric river event the storm will likely be a windy one.

An active pattern is developing with additional chances for snow next across Utah.

Projected snow totals through Sunday morning

Alta: 8-17 inches, 93% chance of more than 8″

Park City: 2-6 inches (mid and upper elevations), 92% chance of more than 2″

Deer Valley: 3-8 inches (mid and upper elevations), 81% chance of more than 4″
