Park City Council considers new senior center location near library
PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Council directed staff Tuesday to explore building a standalone senior center at the Mawhinney lot near the city library, potentially abandoning earlier plans to combine it with affordable housing on Woodside Avenue.
The new location would allow seniors to remain in their current facility during construction, avoiding temporary relocation costs and disruption. However, the site presents challenges with existing parking agreements and size constraints.
“The Mawhinney site offers a lot of really attractive features,” said Craig Weekly, representing the senior working group. “There’s a bus stop route in front, there’s the library right across the way, you have the park right there, and also the building would not directly obstruct any views.”
Key considerations include:
- Facility size between 10,000-15,000 square feet
- Recent city analysis suggesting 9,800 square feet
- Underground or semi-underground parking requirements
- Modification of library overflow parking agreements
- Continued partnership with Summit County for operations
“We need to figure out what size. That’s the bottom line,” said Council member Ed Parigian. “You can’t go forward until you figure out if we want 8, 10, 12, 15 [thousand square feet].”
The council aims to fast-track the senior center project while potentially maintaining separate plans for affordable housing development at the original Woodside location. Staff will return with feasibility findings on the Mawhinney Lot after evaluating parking solutions and building footprint options.
