Park City Mountain

As one of the largest ski resorts in the United States, Park City Mountain boasts over 7,300 acres of skiable terrain. It offers something for everyone, from beginner-friendly runs to advanced bowls and terrain parks. The resort is also known for its lively après-ski scene and proximity to the charming downtown area of Park City. It has everything you could dream of for a ski-centric vacation where you can kick your boots off and be right in the middle of all the action.

Best for: Skiers and riders who enjoy a mix of terrain, vibrant nightlife, and proximity to amenities.

Where to stay: Luxury: Stay at the gorgeous and exclusive Washington Schoolhouse for a special treat. Make sure you make time for their breakfast. It is incredible.

Mid-range: Choose a vacation rental or hotel in Park City proper to enjoy the town’s dining and shopping scene.

Budget: You can find accommodations in Kimball Junction, a short drive away, or take the free bus into town.

Deer Valley Resort

Known for its exceptional service and skier-only policy, Deer Valley provides an upscale experience with impeccably groomed trails, gourmet dining options, and limited lift tickets to avoid overcrowding.

Best for: Those seeking a luxurious, serene ski experience with no snowboarders.

Where to stay: To fully immerse yourself in Deer Valley’s premium experience, opt for ski-in/ski-out accommodations like St. Regis or Montage. Make sure to catch a glimpse of the Champagne sabering at St. Regis! Their brunch is another personal favorite.

Snowbird

Snowbird is a haven for advanced skiers and snowboarders. It is famous for its steep terrain, deep powder, and backcountry access. The resort also offers a scenic tram ride to the summit with breathtaking views.

Best for: Powder enthusiasts and experts who crave challenging runs.

Where to stay:

The Cliff Lodge offers ski-in/ski-out access and luxurious amenities like a spa. For a more budget-friendly option, consider lodging in Sandy or Midvale, which is just a short drive away.

Alta Ski Area

Alta is a skier-only resort known for its deep powder, no-frills atmosphere, and challenging terrain. Its strong focus on skiing culture draws purists who come for the snow rather than the scene.

Best for: Advanced skiers who want a purist skiing experience – or love espresso in their beer.

Where to stay: Alta Lodge offers a cozy, ski-centric stay on the slopes. Alternatively, look into accommodations at Snowbird for access to both resorts via the Alta-Bird pass.

Brighton Resort

Brighton is one of the most affordable resorts in Utah. It is family-friendly, laid-back vibe, offers night skiing, and has excellent beginner terrain.

Best for: Families, budget-conscious skiers, and night skiing enthusiasts.

Where to stay: Stay at local lodges or cabins near Big Cottonwood Canyon. Salt Lake City is also a convenient option, offering more affordable accommodations.

Solitude Mountain Resort

True to its name, Solitude offers a quiet, crowd-free experience with plenty of groomed runs and impressive advanced terrain for those willing to explore. It’s perfect for those who prioritize skiing over nightlife.

Best for: Skiers and riders seeking tranquility and an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Where to stay: Choose the slopeside lodges in Solitude Village for convenience or find cozy Airbnb rentals in the nearby canyon area.

Snowbasin Resort

A personal favorite located near Ogden, Snowbasin combines luxury with challenging terrain, including long groomed runs and expert bowls. Its Olympic legacy adds to its appeal.

Best for: A high-end experience without Park City crowds.

Where to stay: Mountain Green is a new development only 7 miles from Snowbasin. It’s the closest option and has great amenities! For a mix of affordability and proximity, you could also stay in Ogden. The resort’s luxurious day lodges compensate for the lack of on-mountain lodging. It’s worth it!

Powder Mountain

Powder Mountain is a hidden gem strongly emphasizing preserving a natural skiing experience. With limited lift tickets, no man-made snow, and vast acreage, it’s ideal for those looking to escape the crowds.

Best for: Anyone seeking a secluded, powder-filled experience.

Where to stay: The nearby town of Eden offers charming accommodations. Alternatively, Ogden is a convenient base for exploring Powder Mountain and Snowbasin.

Planning Tips for Your Utah Ski Trip

Salt Lake City International Airport provides easy access to most resorts. For Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons resorts, be prepared for chain or 4WD restrictions during heavy snow. Many resorts participate in multi-resort passes like Epic or Ikon, so plan ahead to maximize value! Park City offers a plethora of non-ski activities, including shopping, dining, and the Sundance Film Festival (January). For a quieter experience, explore Ogden’s historical downtown or take advantage of Snowbird’s luxurious spa facilities. Powder Mountain, Snow Basin, Brighton, and Solitude really offer no other amenities than skiing – but to each their own!  Whether you’re looking for a posh retreat or an adrenaline-filled adventure, you’ll find a resort and lodging option perfectly tailored to your needs!
