Utah powers up avalanche safety with “Batteries for Beacons” program
\SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Avalanche Center has launched a program offering free batteries for avalanche beacons as part of a winter safety campaign running through February 2025.
The initiative, launched in partnership with Utah’s Department of Natural Resources and Uinta Brewing Company, aims to ensure backcountry enthusiasts maintain properly functioning avalanche transceivers.
Participants can receive free batteries by bringing their avalanche beacons to participating retailers between December 16, 2024, and February 1, 2025. Those who participate will also be entered into a drawing to win backcountry safety equipment, including avalanche rescue kits and specialized packs.
Participating locations in Salt Lake City include multiple REI stores, Black Diamond retail outlets, and specialty shops such as Skimo Co and Wasatch Touring. In Park City, White Pine Touring and Backcountry are offering the service. The Heber area is served by Karl Malone Polaris and Weller Recreation in Huntsville.
The program requires participants to complete a brief survey by February 1, 2025. A complete list of participating retailers and program details can be accessed through the Utah Avalanche Center’s website.
The center, known for its “Keeping You on Top” mission, focuses on avalanche education and safety in Utah’s backcountry areas.
