Park City gem: Yuki Yama Sushi named among America’s best restaurants

PARK CITY, Utah — Yuki Yama Sushi has secured a place on OpenTable’s prestigious Top 100 Restaurants in America, standing out as the only restaurant in Utah to receive the honor. The annual list, compiled from verified diner reviews, highlights exceptional dining experiences across the country.

The announcement came as a surprise to Yuki Yama’s co-owner Matt Baydala. “We had no idea this was happening,” Baydala said. “One day, I received an email from our account manager saying, ‘You made the Top 100.’ To be recognized among 60,000 restaurants nationwide is incredible and humbling.”

Unlike awards driven by critics, OpenTable’s Top 100 list is shaped entirely by diners. Each year, the platform evaluates thousands of reviews to identify restaurants that consistently deliver excellence. This year’s winners, listed alphabetically by state and restaurant name, represent diverse culinary achievements across the U.S.For Yuki Yama, the recognition highlights its commitment to creating memorable dining experiences. General Manager Breana Wright attributes the restaurant’s success to its dedicated team and close ties with the community.

“It’s exciting to be part of something so meaningful,” Wright said. “We’re a small sushi restaurant in a mountain town, and it’s amazing that our care and attention to detail resonate with guests. This recognition is really a reflection of our team’s hard work.”

The restaurant, which has been operating for 11 years, was particularly proud of the achievement. With 60,000 restaurants on OpenTable’s platform, making the Top 100 is a significant accomplishment.

“The reason we get these great reviews is because of the actual interaction with guests,” Baydala explained. “We’re not a Michelin star restaurant. We just have people making great food day in, day out who care about what we do.”

Wright echoed this sentiment, noting the recognition brings both excitement and pressure. “It was exciting. I was proud of the restaurant and my team,” she said. “Yuki sometimes feels like more than just a restaurant.”

Baydala added, “None of this would have been possible without the relentless dedication and passion of our Executive Chef, Cesar Sandoval. While many people come to work and do their jobs well, Cesar sets himself apart by consistently going above and beyond every single day. His tireless hard work and commitment inspire everyone around him and elevate everything we do.”

Yuki Yama has become a cherished destination on Park City’s Main Street, beloved by locals and visitors alike. Some guests, Wright noted, plan their ski vacations around visits to the restaurant and even request specific staff members for their dining experiences.

“We’ve created a place where people feel connected,” Baydala said. “Our guests know they’ll be greeted by familiar faces and a genuine warmth. That personal connection sets us apart.”

The restaurant’s longevity also contributes to its success. Some staff members have been with Yuki Yama since its early days, providing continuity and a welcoming atmosphere. “It’s not about flashy uniforms or trendy spaces,” Baydala said. “It’s about authenticity and creating an experience that feels real.”

As the winter season approaches, Yuki Yama is gearing up for its busiest time of year. This winter, the restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner, with expanded hours to accommodate locals and visitors alike.

“We’re here for our community year-round,” Baydala said. “Whether it’s a quiet Tuesday night in September or a bustling Friday in January, we strive to give everyone the same exceptional experience.”

For Yuki Yama, being Utah’s sole representative on OpenTable’s Top 100 Restaurants is a significant milestone. But for Baydala and Wright, the real reward lies in the relationships they’ve built and the positive impact they’ve made.

“It’s a huge honor,” Wright said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about doing what we love and making people happy. That’s what keeps us going.”
