Dark Skies deadline approaches: County lighting rules set to take effect

In a world increasingly obscured by artificial light, Summit County and Park City are taking a bold stand to reclaim the stars. Their dark sky ordinances, implemented in 2019 and 2021, represent a critical effort to combat light pollution—a silent environmental disruptor that threatens wildlife, human health, and our connection to the celestial landscape.

At a Summit County Council meeting held Wednesday, December 4, the council said it might be time to start issuing citations to people who don’t follow the rules. If ignored, the citations could progress too fines and even misdemeanor charges as the deadline for compliance is December 31, 2024.

Key Details:

– Ordinances require warm, yellow-toned lights (3,000 Kelvin or less)
– All outdoor light fixtures must be fully shielded and pointed downward
– Compliance deadline is December 31, 2024
– Enforcement will prioritize education over punitive measures

Unique Provisions:

– Eastern Summit County allows brighter agricultural lighting
– Park City permits holiday lighting with specific time restrictions
– Uplighting is universally prohibited
– Exceptions exist for public properties and emergency services

The ordinances serve multiple purposes: conserving energy, protecting nocturnal ecosystems, and preserving the natural beauty of the night sky. By mandating thoughtful lighting design, these communities are pioneering a model of environmental stewardship that recognizes the impact of human illumination on our shared environment.
