Applications open for inaugural Youth Advisory Council

PARK CITY, Utah — Applications for the Park City Youth Advisory Council (PCYAC) are open following a City Council meeting earlier this month that approved the PCYAC’s formation. Ellen Kuck, a junior at Park City High School, will work with the PCYAC to promote the initiative at PCHS, Treasure Mountain Junior High School, Ecker Hill Middle School, and private schools in Park City.

According to the staff report, the PCYAC is intended to “provide local students with an opportunity to engage in the processes of local government, deepen their understanding of community issues, and actively shape the future of Park City.” Membership is aimed at students interested in local government and community issues.

Participants will have many chances to connect with their community, such as attending City Council meetings to observe the legislative process and joining focus groups on various local issues. Students will also have the opportunity to attend City events and interact with local and state officials at the Utah League of Cities and Towns Local Officials Day at the State Legislature, where they can learn about governance and advocate on behalf of Park City.

“By joining the PCYAC, students will gain valuable experience in civic engagement and leadership while enhancing their understanding of local government processes. They will also develop critical thinking and communication skills, empowering them to make a positive impact on the Park City community,” the staff report reads.

Interested students in grades 7 through 12 can apply to the PCYAC here. A selection committee will then choose up to ten students to serve on the inaugural Council beginning in December. Applications are due December 2, 2024, at 5 p.m.
