Theft suspect arrested after foot chase in Kimball Junction
PARK CITY, Utah — A man suspected of shoplifting from Smith’s grocery store in Kimball Junction was arrested this morning following a foot chase with Summit County Sheriff’s deputies.
The incident began when deputies attempted to contact the suspect at his home in the Redstone area of Park City. After the man refused to answer the door, so deputies left. Sgt. Skyler Talbot, public information officer for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, said, “We just didn’t have the legal standing to enter the home, even though we knew he likely was involved in this theft. A short time later, we returned, spoke to family members, who said he had left and was on a jog.”
Deputies then located the suspect on the bike trail. “We attempted to contact him, and he fled on foot,” Sgt. Talbot said. “When our deputies caught up to him, a Taser was deployed and he was taken into custody.”
The suspect, described as a man in his 30s and a Kimball Junction resident, is accused of theft from a Smith’s grocery store. The exact value of stolen goods is still being determined.
“Smith’s is still trying to do an accounting for what all they believe was taken,” Sgt. Talbot explained. “It sounds like the individual was just going through aisles, putting things in bags.”
The suspect’s identity has not been released pending formal charges. He is expected to be booked into the county jail.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
