Park City Police Captain honored in global “40 Under 40” law enforcement awards

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Police Captain Robert McKinney has been named one of the top law enforcement officers in the world, receiving the prestigious “40 Under 40” award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

The annual award recognizes 40 law enforcement professionals under the age of 40 who demonstrate leadership, commitment to their profession, and positive impact on their agencies, communities, and the field of policing.

McKinney, who joined the Park City Police Department in 2014, has served in various roles, including SWAT operator, SWAT team leader, motor officer, traffic unit supervisor, and department training coordinator.

In announcing the award, the IACP highlighted McKinney’s dedication, noting, “Since joining the Park City Police Department in 2014, Cpt. McKinney has fulfilled various roles… His dedication is evident in his work, from overseeing the Field Operations Bureau to volunteering for patrol shifts on holidays to ensure that his staff have time with their families.”

The 2024 award recipients represent rising leaders in policing from six countries, serving in agencies ranging from small local police departments to large national organizations.

McKinney’s career in law enforcement began after a ride-along sparked his passion for serving and protecting his community. After briefly working in sales following college graduation, he put himself through the police academy in 2008 and became a state trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol.

At the Park City Police Department, McKinney has helped roll out community-focused initiatives. In 2023, he played a key role in the department’s participation in the IACP Trust Building Campaign. Under his command, the Field Operations Bureau prioritizes serving underrepresented citizens, overseeing programs such as the Latino Driver’s License initiative, which has helped over 200 community members obtain valid driver’s licenses in Utah.

McKinney actively participates in community events like Shop with a Cop, Faith in Blue, and Coffee with a Cop. He is often called upon to serve as Park City’s acting chief when needed.

“My motivation in law enforcement comes from the countless selfless acts performed by my colleagues on a daily basis,” McKinney said.
