Women in Business event in Park City celebrates female leadership and mentorship

PARK CITY, Utah — Sara Sergent has established herself as a prominent figure in the world of spirits and distilling through her business, Alpine Distilling, which she runs alongside her husband, Rob. Sergent. Their unwavering dedication to craft has earned her numerous industry accolades, including the prestigious honor of being inducted into the Gin Guild in London.

When she isn’t creating delightful libations, she’s busy creating the next generation of women leaders and garnering a group of mentors to help pave the way. Sergent hosted her first Women in Business Panel on July 31 at Alpine Distilling’s Social Aid and Pleasure Club, with the goal of turning it into a series.

The panel included an array of women from various sectors in the Park City community, including City Councilor Tana Toly, business owner Meisha Ross, and nonprofit leader Emmie Gardner. The panel discussion was led by Park City Chamber president and CEO Jennifer Wesselhoff.

Mayor Nann Worel opened the event with a message about the progress of female leadership in Park City. “It took us 138 years to elect a female mayor,” Mayor Worel said. “But, now that we’re here, we’re committed to mentoring the next generation and breaking down barriers for women in leadership.”

“Last year, we had a city council election with eight candidates, all of whom were white males. Where were the women?” – Mayor Worel

Toly, co-owner of the Red Banjo and a city councilor, emphasized the significance of mentorship in fostering female leadership. “Mentorship is crucial for breaking down barriers and encouraging women to step up,” Toly said. “We need to support young women and let them know that failure is just a stepping stone to success.”

The panel also discussed the challenges young women face to balance life, career and family – making the jump into leadership positions that much harder to reach.

The panelists shared their personal strategies for balancing professional responsibilities with personal lives. Ross, owner of Twisted Fern, marketing consultant, and mom of two, spoke about the importance of community support. “Park City is an incredibly welcoming community,” she said. “The support I’ve received here has made it easier to take risks and learn from my failures.”

Toly discussed her routine for maintaining work-life balance, even if it begins with a 5 a.m. wake up. “I start each day with self-care, whether it’s hiking, yoga, or journaling,” she said. “It’s essential to set aside time for yourself to stay grounded and focused.”

Sergent has the goal of bringing these topics to the table to help be the driving force behind getting women out into the forefront of their fields.

“This event is about celebrating the power of mentorship and the endless possibilities it creates,” Sergent said. “We want young women to see that they have a place in leadership roles.”

Emmie Gardner, CEO of Holy Cross Ministries, noted how unique Park City is as a support system for women saying, “Women lead with compassion and a collaborative spirit. In Park City, we have seen incredible progress because of the strong female leaders who support and uplift each other.”
