New trail enhances access to Bonanza Flat Conservation Area
PARK CITY, Utah — A new high-altitude trail will have its grand opening today in the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area, marking the culmination of a five-year collaborative effort between local organizations including: Mountain Trails Foundation, Park City Municipal, and Utah Open Lands.
The Bonanza Loop Trail, a 5-mile (8-kilometer) multi-use path, will be inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. at the Bonanza Flat Trailhead.
Situated at approximately 9,000 feet (2,743 meters) elevation near Guardsman Pass, the trail is part of the 1,500-acre (607-hectare) conservation area managed by Utah Open Lands. The project required the construction of three bridges to protect the watershed and underwent extensive environmental review.
The intermediate-level trail is open to non-motorized recreation, including mountain biking and hiking, from July 1 to October 1 annually. To protect local wildlife, dogs are not permitted on the trail.
Mountain bikers are required to ride counterclockwise, while hikers are advised to move clockwise. Trail officials strongly discourage the use of dual earbuds to ensure users remain alert to wildlife and other trail-goers.
The Bonanza Loop Trail provides access to the conservation area while aiming to protect the natural flora and fauna.
To manage congestion, parking at the trailhead is limited. Visitors are encouraged to use the bike-friendly Transit to Trails shuttle service.
The trail opening marks a significant milestone in the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area’s Trails Master Plan, which included the decommissioning of numerous unofficial trails that were harmful to the local ecosystem.
For more information on trail etiquette and shuttle reservations, visitors can check the Utah Open Lands website.
