Summit County’s first full-time school resource officer begins duty
Summit County Sheriff’s Office partners with school district for first-ever cost-share school resource officer position
SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the South Summit School District to hire a full-time school resource officer, the first cost-share agreement of its kind in Summit County.
Detective Wes Stewart, a former Granite School District custodian, returns to the school setting where he began his career as a police officer. Stewart will now serve as the South Summit School District’s first full-time school resource officer. He worked with Granite School District’s SRO for a year before the Summit County Sheriff’s Office hired him as a patrol deputy.
“We’re so appreciative of the School Board and the County Council for working together to make this happen,” said Greg Maughan, Ed.D., South Summit School District superintendent. “I have had so much positive feedback from administrators, teachers and parents. He’s already having an impact and exhibiting everything we could hope for in an SRO.”
Detective Stewart said, “It’s fantastic to get to know the students at the schools. I have already met many extraordinary students with many talents,” Stewart said. “I’m excited to be joining the South Summit School District and helping the students grow.”
