Peaks and pipes— Park City’s snowboarder plumber

PARK CITY, Utah—Have you ever heard of an Olympian plumber? Jonathan Cheever, professional snowboard cross athlete and Master Plumber, was sponsored by Bradford White Water Heaters, American Standard, and Viega. After retiring from professional competition, which includes over 100 World Cups, 10 X Games, and the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, Cheever opened Team Cheever Plumbing and Heating.

From the outskirts of Boston in Saugus, Massachusetts, Cheever’s journey into snowboarding began serendipitously with a gas station promotion— free snowboard lessons in exchange for gas purchases kickstarted his weekends on the slopes of New Hampshire and Maine. Despite participating in various sports during his youth, snowboarding emerged as a standout passion.

Cheever founded his high school’s ski and snowboard club in Malden, a town far removed from mountainous terrain. His success in local events earned him a spot on the junior national teams. From high school, he attended UMASS Lowell with the intention of majoring in mechanical engineering; during his freshman year, he simultaneously earned his journeyman plumber’s license.

In 2004, Cheever made the strategic move to Park City, competing on the NorAm Cup before earning a coveted spot on the US national team in the 2005-2006 season. His snowboarding career amassed nearly 100 World Cup appearances, an Olympic stint, national championships, and numerous podium finishes.

Navigating between snowboarding feats, Cheever remained rooted in his father’s plumbing legacy as it has been operating on the East Coast for almost 50 years. Undertaking plumbing jobs and small renovations during off-seasons, he obtained a general contracting license and a Master Plumber’s license in Utah during the pandemic year.

In the present day, Cheever, alongside his partner Madeleine and stepdaughter Lydia, spearheads Team Cheever. Their business model reflects a contemporary approach to plumbing, incorporating modern techniques, cutting-edge technology, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. The company’s swift success underscores Cheever’s dedication to his trade and the local community.

Beyond his entrepreneurial endeavors, Cheever actively engages with the Park City community. Volunteering with the local snowboard team, exploring sponsorships for soccer and dance teams, and championing a start gate training camp at the Utah Olympic Park for aspiring snowboarders—Cheever actively contributes to the community that has embraced him.

Navigating the peaks and pipes, achieving success through unconventional paths. From gas station promotions to plumbing jobs and podiums, Cheever built his business off of hard work and dedication to client and community.
