Watch the Perseids meteor shower narrated by astronaut Colonel Terry Virts
WANSHIP, Utah—The Lodge at Blue Sky is hosting an astronomical experience like no other during the Perseids Meteor Shower on August 12.
The event will be co-hosted by Astronaut Colonel Terry Virts, and Manhattan-based speakeasy PS by Pine & Polk owned by Lindsay Weiss and Alyssa Golub, with their star mixologist Melissa Derfler in attendance.
The evening will be filled with small bites and stardust cocktails created by Pine & Polk on the deck of the sporting yurt at Blue Sky.
Colonel Terry Virts will narrate what guests are seeing during the Perseids Meteor shower and the wonders of the night sky. With the help of Vaonis’s smart telescopes, guests will be able to capture deep-space images and send them straight to their personal devices, making for a truly interactive experience.
“Being on the mountaintop yurt at Blue Sky, the light pollution is basically nonexistent,” said Joe Ogdie, general manager of The Lodge at Blue Sky. “That, along with listening to someone who has commanded the International Space Station telling you about the space you are looking at and bringing the stars closer while enjoying the unique pop-up by Pine & Polk, makes this a very unique offering.”
The Perseids Meteor Shower takes place every summer from mid-July to late August, lighting up the night sky with approximately 60 meteors (shooting stars) per hour.
According to Space.com, the 2023 Perseids will be even better, with only 10% of the moon illuminated. Earth passing through debris left behind by comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed close to Earth in 1992, is the cause behind the Perseids. These meteor showers are formed by bits of ice and rock, creating a celestial spectacle worth watching.
