Stephen Curry documentary premieres at the Sundance Film Festival
PARK CITY, Utah — Stephen Curry, his family, and his former Davidson College basketball teammates and coach were in the audience for the world premiere of Stephen Curry: Underrated. The film debuted at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival in the Eccles Center in Park City, Utah.
Steph Curry’s documentary, Stephen Curry: Underrated, will be distributed through Apple Original Films and on Apple TV+ in the near future. The movie walks through the difficulties that Steph endured through high school. All that he ever wanted was to go to his parents’, Sonya and Dell Curry’s, alma mater, Virginia Tech. Due to his size, he was never actively recruited by many Division 1 NCAA basketball programs. Davidson College was one of the only NCAA schools to pursuit Curry.
Underrated uncovers the hardships and realities of Curry’s non-meteoric rise to fame. At every chapter in the film, the story unfolds with discussion around a small shooting guard that never had a chance. All while, walking through the Golden State Warriors 2022 NBA Championship year and Steph Curry’s record setting 3-pointer at Madison Square Garden, when he hit his 2,974th 3-pointer, to overtake Ray Allen as the NBA record holder.
The majority of the story is around the Davidson College NCAA March Madness run in 2008. Davidson was the ‘Cinderella Story’ of the 2008 NCAA college basketball tournament. That college basketball team was a crucial platform for Steph on his journey to greatness. Having left college early for the draft, Steph makes it a mission to complete his college degree, as a promise to his mother and as a requirement from his coach to retire his number in the rafters.
The film was very well received by the audience, with several standing ovations. Curry’s son, Canon and grandmother, Candy were delightful additions to the film (drawing many laughs).
