Police Log: Multiple retail thefts, drug possession charges

Monday, December 19

Theft

Deputies responded to a theft report that had just occurred at Smith’s Grocery store on Uinta Way. The victim reported that an unidentified suspect had taken her wallet out of her purse while it was in her shopping cart. Her debit cards were used at Walmart and Best Buy before the victim could cancel them. There is currently no suspect information, and the case is being forwarded to detectives for further follow-up.

Possession of Methamphetamine

Deputies responded to a welfare check at the rest area on I-80 near mile marker 171 for a male yelling at people. Deputies made contact with the male, later identified as a 33-year-old Magna man, at the rest area. The man refused to cooperate with deputies and was identified through his vehicle registration. K9 Units were deployed and indicated the presence of narcotics on the person. The male advised deputies he was in possession of methamphetamine, which he produced from his pockets. He was subsequently arrested and transported to the Summit County Jail. The vehicle was impounded.

Tuesday, December 20

Possession of Marijuana

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on I-80 Eastbound for a vehicle traveling well above the speed limit. THC products were observed in the vehicle during initial contact with the driver, and user amounts of THC products were confiscated. The 26-year-old California woman was issued a citation and subsequently released from the traffic stop.

Wednesday, December 21

Criminal Mischief

A 56-year-old Park City man followed another customer into the storage units, got what he wanted out of his container, and then discovered himself barred outside the gate. The man tried to exit the building using his code, but he was unable to do so because he had not paid his rent. The individual decided to ram the storage unit fence with his pickup to escape rather than make contact with the on-site property management.

The individual damaged the gate to the tune of $15,000–$20,000. He was detained on charges of felony criminal mischief. He was also charged with possession. A user-sized quantity of THC gummies were discovered while the man’s backpack was being inventoried.

Theft

Deputies responded to a theft at Michael Kors at the Outlets Park City in which a male individual ran into the store, stole multiple handbags, and ran out into a vehicle that fled the area. Deputies circulated the area, but the suspect vehicle was not located. The items stolen amounted to more than $3,800. There was little suspect information provided.

Thursday, December 22

Theft

A male contacted dispatch to report a past occurred theft that had taken place on December 10, 2022. The man’s son had left his snowboard in a snowboard rack next to the ticket booth and ski lift at the Canyons Village at Park City. The snowboard was stolen from the rack. The male reported the incident to the customer service station on the date of the incident. There are no leads, evidence, or suspects to follow up with.
