SUMMARY:Plugging the Thaynes Shaft with a New Method
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History will host a lecture\, Plugging the Thaynes Shaft with a New Method\, presented by Brian Buck and Davey Jones on Wednesday\, October 21\, 2026\, from 5-6 p.m.\, at the Education and Collections Center at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information can be found at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nWhat do skier subways\, underground caverns\, huge foam blocks\, underground waterfalls\, and the highest building in the country all have in common?  Why\, the Thaynes mineshaft of course.  Brian Buck\, Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History\, and David Jones\, Utah Division of Oil\, Gas & Mining (OGM) will describe how all the above relate to the Thaynes mineshaft.  It played a one-of-a-kind role in worldwide skiing history with a subterranean skier train carrying skiers 2.5 miles into a repurposed mine tunnel where they rode a mine shaft elevator cage straight up 1\,700 feet to the surface\, which exceeds the elevator lift of the highest building in the country by almost 500 feet!  They will also describe how conventional engineering approaches to closing this collapsing shaft would not work because of groundwater flowing into the cavern caused by the shaft collapse and how the construction team came up with a new method using custom-made foam blocks.  This project brought national attention to the Thaynes shaft and the unique approach to safely close it. \nBrian has degrees in Geology and Geological Engineering. His career has been with the Utah Division of Oil\, Gas and Mining\, Getty Mining Company\, JBR Environmental Consultants\, and Stantec Consulting. All of his 49 years of professional experience has largely involved working with the mining industry in the U.S. West. Since his retirement\, Brian has focused on studying the history of the Park City mining district. He joined the local Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History committee in 2016 and has been the Project Manager for their major construction projects for the last five years. Brian has given several mining history lectures for the Park City Museum and written Way We Were Articles for the Park Record on mining. \n	Similar Reads On TownLift\n\nDavey Jones grew up in England and obtained a B.S. in Geography from Durham University in 2008.  He moved from England to Utah in 2014. He began his career in flood modeling\, producing flood models and running risk matrices on UK postcodes to help the insurance and reinsurance industry assess property flood risk. In 2015\, after moving to Utah\, he moved into consulting\, where his primary focus was producing FEMA flood maps. In this role\, he also carried out a number of field inventories of mining districts for Utah’s Division of Oil\, Gas and Mining’s (OGM) Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program (AMRP). Davey moved over to work for the AMRP in 2018 as a Project Manager\, where he has worked on several reclamation projects\, including the Defense-Related Uranium Mines project\, which is a multi-agency project spearheaded by the Department of Energy. He has worked on reclamation projects all over Utah including the Wasatch Front\, Oquirrh mountains and in the Moab area. He was OGM’s Project Manager for the closing of the Silver King Coalition Mine shaft in 2023 and the Thaynes shaft in 2025. \n\n\n	Similar Reads On TownLift

SUMMARY:Glenwood Cemetery Funerals
DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture titled Glenwood Cemetery Funerals\, presented by Barbara Martz on Wednesday\, October 28\, 2026\, from 5-6 p.m.\, at the Education and Collections Center at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information is available at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nPark City’s Fraternal Organization established the Glenwood Cemetery in 1885 to provide a burial place for their members\, a benefit of membership. It was a classic Victorian cemetery in a not-so-Victorian town\, and many funerals did not follow Victorian tradition. Barbara will introduce you to William Gidley\, a colorful man who was the Glenwood’s sexton from 1898 until 1924\, the year he died. Have you ever wondered how graves were dug in the middle of a Park City winter 125 years ago? \nYou will hear about the funerals in general in those days\, and the specifics of some very unusual ones. Some funerals were simple. Others were elaborate with brass bands and processions of mourners following the hearse to the Glenwood. Several funerals encountered rather unexpected events which you will learn about in detail. For example\, do you know that the Crescent tramway ran along the hillside above the Glenwood? DESCRIPTION:Park City Museum will host a lecture titled Mormons and Ardent Spirits\, presented by Sandy Brumley and Troy Dryer on Wednesday\, November 11\, 2026\, from 5-6 p.m.\, at the Education and Collections Center at 2079 Sidewinder Drive. More information is available at www.parkcityhistory.org. \nIn 1847\, when the Mormons arrived in Utah\, ardent spirits were part of the local craft which was enjoyed by all\, Mormon and gentile alike. In 1851\, Brigham Young had a revelation that The Saints should no longer imbibe. He also monopolized the liquor trade in a highly successful revenue-generating scheme for himself and his church.  The Dryer family was awarded the Idaho franchise of the monopoly. \nTroy Dryer and Sandy Brumley will describe the history of local spirits distribution\, including a whisky known as “Valley Tan\,” from early Utah through the Park City Silver Rush. Troy will provide insights from his perspective as a 5th-generation Latter-day Saint\, while Sandy will share research on the early Utah distribution trade in eastern spirits and beers. Who were the prominent characters to produce\, distribute\, and own saloons?  Where is Whiskey Street?  Which temple has a bottle of wine stored in the cornerstone? Why were the practices different from the observance of early Latter-day Saints? \n	Similar Reads On TownLift\n\nA mountain host and hiking guide at Park City Mountain Resort\, Sandy Brumley is a descendant of iron miners in Minnesota and an avid student of Park City History. This will be the fifth in a series of presentations he has made for the Museum. He is a hike leader for the Museum and a member of Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History. \nTroy Dryer grew up worldwide as a military child\, though he maintains strong connections to Utah. His ancestors settled near Brigham City in 1862 before moving to Idaho. Troy graduated from Bountiful High School and earned a finance degree from the University of Utah. As a financial planner\, Troy helps companies and institutions establish and monitor retirement plans. He divides his time between Dallas and Park City\, while several interests occupy much of his schedule.
